Start where you are.

This is my all-time favourite mantra since becoming a mother.

I know myself, I’ve the habit of wanting to be an expert at everything because I’m anxious that I’d somehow miss something, and my child would get less than she deserves.

When I first heard about environmental toxins, I nearly threw out all our baby products and 2-3 spare ones we had bought.

When I first learned about the importance of nutrition (and found out that pregnancy + breastfeeding = higher risks of iron deficiency), I nearly signed up for 3 courses on pre/postnatal nutrition.

When I first heard about Montessori pedagogy, I signed up for the professional certification.

My husband would joke that I needed a Masters in everything before I could do anything. Not a compliment.

This mantra has been so helpful in getting me to take small actions. It has also reminded me of the value of simple, everyday habits.

I learned these simple strategies that are helpful pre and postnatally from my midwife.

  1. Front load your water intake. Drink 1 cup when you wake up. Have a 1-litre bottle filled up, placed at your work desk and aim to finish it before your lunch break.
  2. Get some healthy nuts to sprinkle into your breakfast and lunch, and you immediately up your protein and healthy fats intake.
  3. Carry your toddler when you asks for it. Get on the floor to play with her. Move with her. And naturally, I’m getting more squats and steps in the day.

If you don’t have a toddler, drop off a station or two earlier than your destination and walk. Take the stairs instead of the escalator.

If you work in the office, I also have the standing desk in front of me. So every once in a while, I’m reminded to stand while working.

Start where you are with what you have. It helps to reduce the overwhelm and focus you on what you can control (here’s why it’s important) ANDDDD focus you on your wins.
